How do they know the poison is harmless to other reef life? I don’t think they can possibly know that for sure. What if periodic overgrazing by starfish is critically important for the lifecycles of some reef ecosystems the way forest fires are on land?
Thankfully biological ecosystems are pretty good at recovering from stupid shit humans do because we don’t know any better… of course, sometimes that recovery takes the form of a new balance rather than the old appearance, but that’s natural, too.
Not that there’s anything wrong with poisoning predators that kill things humans want to keep alive, after all. Right??
